Gable was born in 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio, to an oil field worker father and farm girl mother. They moved around Ohio for several years until Clark Gable was bitten by the acting bug after seeing a play at the age of 15. He was so smitten that he started working in the local theater for no pay, only earning whatever tips the actors would give him.
After a few years of working his way up, he moved to Hollywood and became an extra in silent films for a couple of years. His first big break came in 1931 when he landed the leading role in Dance, Fools, Dance, at the request of Joan Crawford. From there, he went on to become Hollywood’s biggest leading man, starring in a string of hits throughout the 1930s.
Shortly after the U.S. joined World War II, Clark Gable enlisted in the Army, where he was an aerial gunner. He spent several years overseas before coming home and continuing his film career.
Gable had five wives over the years, two of which were the most famous - Carole Lombard (his third wife) and Kay Williams (his fifth wife). Lombard’s tragic death in 1942 was difficult for Gable but several years later, he married his fourth wife. That union was short-lived, but his marriage to Kay Williams lasted until his death in 1960 at the age of 59.
