Haiku 5.5: Your Claude Code Agents Don't All Need Opus
Come be part of the crew: https://www.crafterslab.dev
Opus on every agent — does the job need it, or did the file search just inherit the builder's config?
Haiku 5.5 makes that default worth questioning, without handing the whole app to a smaller model.
I'm reacting to Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5 announcement and its arrival in Claude Code, looking at where I'd try a smaller model around the builder — repo exploration, tracing call sites, gathering context and summarizing diffs — while keeping architecture, ambiguous bugs and the hairy SwiftUI implementation on the strong model.
The part I care about isn't just the price per token, it's what comes back from the subagent, what the builder has to check, and whether retries and rework eat the saving we thought we'd made. We look at the pricing threshold, tokenizer change and the distinction between the default Haiku model and the model our main session actually runs.
This is an announcement-led reaction and a where-I'd-start, not a hands-on Haiku review, benchmark showdown or claim that I've tested this split.
Crafter's Lab is a living workshop around a real app studio, where we build the systems that build our apps — not a course.
