SHB Ramp Update -- June 2025
Key Players Behind Sydney's New Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp
The construction of the long-awaited bicycle ramp at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a project driven by the New South Wales government, with key responsibilities for its delivery falling to Transport for NSW. The construction contract for this significant infrastructure project has been awarded to Arenco (NSW) Pty Ltd.
The design of the new ramp, a crucial element in making the iconic bridge more accessible for cyclists of all abilities, was led by landscape architecture and urban design firm ASPECT Studios. They worked in collaboration with a team of other specialist firms to bring the design to fruition.
The project, which is currently under construction, will finally provide a seamless connection for cyclists, eliminating the need to carry their bikes up and down 55 steps at the Milsons Point end of the bridge. This has been a point of contention and advocacy from cycling groups for decades.
Transport for NSW has overseen the entire process, from community consultation and design competitions to the final awarding of the construction contract. The project has involved extensive planning and consultation, navigating the complexities of modifying a heritage-listed structure and addressing community feedback.
Therefore, while Transport for NSW is the overarching government body responsible for the project, the physical construction is being carried out by Arenco, based on the design developed by ASPECT Studios and their collaborators.
