New Mexico is big enough to fit all of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut combined. But you’ll find more people in Brooklyn than across this whole state. How can a place so big feel so empty? It’s a question many people have — and while the wording might be off, the feeling behind it is real. New Mexico does have over two million people, but they’re spread thin across miles and miles of desert, mountains, and plains. With only about 17 people per square mile, it’s one of the least densely populated states in the country. For comparison, the national average is nearly 94 people per square mile. And while the country continues to grow, New Mexico’s population growth has slowed way down — even dipping into decline in recent years. So the question isn’t really “why no one lives here,” but rather: why don’t more people stay?
