Spotlight On: Dr. Shimi Kang
Award-Winning Harvard-Trained Physician | Author of The Dolphin Way
An award-winning doctor, researcher, and lecturer on human motivation, Dr. Shimi Kang offers the keys people of all ages need to succeed in the workplace and at home. With over fifteen years of clinical experience and extensive training in the science that lies behind motivation and mental wellness, Dr. Kang shows people how to cultivate the skills needed to flourish both professionally and personally.
The author of The Dolphin Way: A Parent's Guide To Raising Healthy, Happy, and Motivated Kids Without Turning Into a Tiger, Dr. Kang refutes the "Tiger Parenting" model promoted in today's popular culture. Believing the Tiger approach diminishes lifelong learning, internal drive, and long-term happiness in children, Dr. Kang instead advocates for the "Dolphin Parenting" model, which encourages collaboration, social skills, creativity, and internal motivation in the way in which we raise our children.
Dr. Kang's own experience supports her "Dolphin" approach to parenting her three children--growing up, she was never enrolled in a single extra-curricular activity, but despite this entered medical school at the age of 19 and completed her research fellowship at Harvard.
Dr. Kang is the Medical Director of Child and Youth Mental Health for Vancouver; she is the founder of the Provincial Youth Concurrent Disorders Program at BC Children's Hospital; and the co-founder of the Youth, Culture, and Mental Health Fund for the BC Mental Health Foundation. Dr. Kang has also published numerous articles, book chapters, manuals, and monographs in the area of alcohol dependence, addictions, youth and women's mental health, motivation, and cross-cultural issues in healthcare.
As a speaker, Dr. Kang has presented for clients including Eli Lilly, the David Suzuki Foundation, and the Canadian Psychiatric Association in addition to medical schools, hospitals, and conferences across North America. In the media, Dr. Kang is a recognized specialist who has contributed to numerous newspapers, online news, radio, and television programs on common and complex conditions such as stress, relationships, motivation, depression, suicide, and addiction.
