Surveillance Capitalism Explained: Why every app and social network steals your data

In 2004, Facebook launched News Feed, showing everyone what your friends were eating for lunch. It was a very exciting time for the internet.

Advertisers saw this and thought, “If people will overshare this much for free, imagine what they’ll give us if we don’t even ask.” By 2007, right after the first iPhone dropped, Facebook rolled out its first Ad Platform, offering advertisers the ability to use your data to target you with adverts.

It wasn’t long before everyone wanted every single data point of your life and now every tech start up sees selling your data as the default business model.

Let’s look at Surveillance capitalism. How does it work? Why is it legal? And what can we do about it? But let’s start with, what is Surveillance capitalism?
