Welcome back to ProGuitarShop and ToneReport.com, we’re knocking back the Formula 55, from Catalinbread. The Formula 55 is a double-barreled shotgun blast of 5E3 Tweed Deluxe tones, using JFETs instead of tube to recreate the legendary preamp. The Formula 55 provides a pushbutton switch for Hi and Lo modes that are meant to simulate a full tube swap, with Hi mode picking up where the Lo mode leaves off. In Lo mode, the Formula 55 delivers harmonically-rich cleans and medium gain that is unmistakably tweed. In the Hi mode, all bets are off and the circuit is flooded with overdrive, delivering circuit-melting gobs of gain that would make Neil Young blush. A unique Presence control goes above and beyond the design of the original amp, adding a cut or boost to the 5k frequency band to warm up the pedal’s character when cut, or add more snarl and bite when dimed. Just like a real tweed Deluxe, the Formula 55 commands a staggering amount of output that will push your amp into the red zone with a simple twist of the knob. And because the Formula 55 is billed as a foundation overdrive, it will react like an amp at any point in your signal chain. This reactance is only enhanced by its ability to operate at 18 volts for supreme headroom. And just like all Catalinbread pedals, the Formula 55 is made right here in Portland, Oregon.
