Acid Reflux (GERD): Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Acid reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a chronic condition where stomach acid or bile flows back into the food pipe, causing symptoms such as heartburn, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing.

This occurs when the ring of muscle that separates the esophagus and stomach, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), does not function properly, allowing stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus.
