US 30 Through Malvern | When the Lincoln Highway Was Widened in 1925
In this installment of my drive along historic US 30, we travel from Paoli through Malvern toward the future Exton Bypass.
Long before modern expressways, Pennsylvania engineers were already struggling with traffic congestion on the Lincoln Highway. In 1925, crews rebuilt the road between Downingtown and Exton using an innovative three-lane design: two 10-foot concrete lanes separated by a 10-foot macadam center section. The goal was to widen the highway while keeping traffic moving and avoiding lengthy detours.
As we drive west from Paoli, we'll explore how these early improvements helped shape one of Pennsylvania's most important transportation corridors. We'll also look at how traffic growth along the Main Line eventually led to larger projects, including the US 202 Expressway and the Exton Bypass.
Along the way, we'll revisit the original Lincoln Highway alignment and examine how a century of upgrades transformed a rural road into the busy corridor we know today.
