Exam Prep Sound Waves

Let's start with our first topic: how sound is produced and transmitted.
1. Production and Transmission of Sound
Sound is produced whenever an object vibrates
. These vibrations send out waves by repeatedly pushing and pulling on the surrounding air
.
Longitudinal Waves: Sound is a longitudinal wave, meaning the vibrations occur parallel to the direction the wave travels
. This creates a pattern of compressions (high-pressure areas where molecules are bunched together) and rarefactions (low-pressure areas where they are spread out)
.
The Need for a Medium: Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because it requires a material medium—like air, water, or rock—to transmit these vibrations
. For instance, sound does not travel in outer space because there are no molecules to compress or rarefy
.
Speed in Different Media: Sound travels at different speeds depending on the medium's properties, such as density and temperature
. Generally, it travels fastest in solids and slowest in gases because molecules in solids are closer together, allowing energy to transfer more quickly
.
Does the difference between a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave make sense to you, or would you like to move on to Wave Vocabulary (like frequency and amplitude)?
