‘Wartime president’ Trump invokes Defense Production Act in fight against ‘Chinese virus’

At the Coronavirus Task Force press briefing held at the White House Wednesday, US President Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act, a federal provision that allows the government to marshal the private sector in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The provision is said to be able to help make up for potential medical supply shortages like that of masks and more.Speaking on the first clinical trial of the vaccine candidate in Washington State, Trump congratulated the “unprecedented partnership” between the FDA, NIH, and the private sector, calling it the fastest vaccine development in history. He also announced the closing of the U.S.-Canada border.
