Will & William West
From the 1870s, in Europe and America, the Bertillon system was used for the identification of criminals. It was based on the physical measurements of prisoners, such as bone length, head circumference, the size of fingers and toes, nose measurements, descriptions of the ear, and so on.

But in 1903, in Kansas, something strange happened: a man of color named Will West was arrested. During the usual anthropometric measurements taken to compile his identification record, it was discovered that another inmate in the same prison, named William West, had exactly the same measurements. The two men, who always denied being related, bore an astonishing resemblance.

Following this discovery, the Bertillon method began to fall into disuse in favor of the simpler and more reliable fingerprint analysis.
