The sewer scene in It (2017) became one of the most viral horror openings of the decade.

Did you know Bill Skarsgård and Jackson Robert Scott (Georgie) never rehearsed it together? Director Andy Muschietti wanted Georgie’s fear to be completely authentic, so he kept the actors separated until the cameras rolled. Skarsgård also invented a vocal trick for Pennywise — shifting his pitch mid-sentence — to make the character sound disturbingly unnatural. And the entire storm drain was built as a practical set, with hidden water tanks feeding the rain to give Muschietti full control over the look.

It’s the scene that turned a storm drain into one of the most terrifying places in cinema.
