Indonesia: Rohingya Rescue on Smugglers' Boat

"We were starving, there was no food or water. The children were crying." - With no help in sight, Roshid, a young Rohingya man, made a brave decision.

Earlier this year, Roshid, from Rakhine state, Myanmar, boarded a smugglers' boat in the Bay of Bengal. The smugglers promised to take him to Malaysia. In May, after months at sea, the smugglers abandoned Roshid and 408 other passengers on his boat.

They were stranded in the Andaman Sea, less than 50km northwest of Langkawi, Malaysia. At least eight passengers had already died.
