Nearly 20 years before the war between US forces and the Viet Cong in Vietnam there was another Vietnam War...

At the end of the Second World War, Vietnam (which was part of a region known as Indochina and governed by the French) was being occupied by Japanese forces. 

But Communist Guerrillas, known as the Viet Minh, started to take control of the country. The French authorities, still recovering from the long war in Europe, sent the British to intervene and establish control.

The operation was codenamed: MASTERDOM
