Capela Romanică sau Rotonda din Geoagiu este recunoscută ca fiind cea mai veche biserică medievală de piatră din România. Potrivit istoricilor, a fost construită în secolele XI - XII, în vremea regelui Ladislau I al Ungariei.

Arhitectura sa amintește de forma altarelor geto-dacice, având similitudini cu "Rotonda lui Galeriu" de la Salonic. Construită în jurul anului 1100, capelă romanică impresionează prin stilul său neobișnuit, asemănător unui turn. Această particularitate o face să fie considerată o bijuterie arhitecturală cu o semnificație istorică deosebită pentru patrimoniul cultural al României.

Legenda spune că Biserica Rotonda, cu ziduri groase din cărămidă romană şi piatră de râu, ar fi fost ridicată de cavalerii templieri, la sfârșitul Cruciadei a II-a.

The Romanesque Chapel or Rotunda in Geoagiu is acknowledged as Romania's oldest medieval stone church. According to historians, it was constructed during the 11th - 12th centuries, in the era of King Ladislaus I of Hungary.

Its architecture is reminiscent of the shape of the Geto-Dacian altars, exhibiting resemblances to the "Rotunda of Galerius" in Thessaloniki. Constructed around the year 1100, the Romanesque chapel stands out with its peculiar style, resembling a tower. Such distinctiveness designates it as an architectural treasure with profound historical importance for Romania's cultural heritage.

The legend says that the Rotunda Church, with its thick walls made of Roman bricks and river stones, was built by the Knights Templar at the end of the Second Crusade.
