Easy DIY Trellis For Tomatoes

This year I decided to utilize my space around my pergola built last summer to grow some tomatoes vertically. I thought it to be a perfect structure to grow on and save space in my backyard. I recently worked on a large farm where we used the lower and lean method of growing tomatoes. This method evolves growing up a string allowing them to grow as tall as they want rather than just confining them to a small cage.

I'm only doing this for my indeterminate tomatoes this year(quick Google search or back of seed packet is the easiest way to figure out which variety you have) and also only for the small varieties like cherry and grape tomatoes. Since it's my first time growing up a string outside of a greenhouse, I wanted to make sure the tomato wasn't too heavy and weighing the string down or to cause it to break. I chose more natural string that might not be as strong as some other synthetic ones that you could go with. Although I have seen people string larger varieties I have only seen it done on string that is stronger and more durable than what I decided to use. I am already using plastic pieces to hold the tomato plants to the string and therefore just didn't want to use string that would end up in a landfill and not decompose quickly. The plastic pieces I can re-use again and again.
