Association Between Duration of Sports Activities and Mortality

Dr. James O’Keefe, a Cardiologist from St. Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO, reviews his article appearing online and in the December 2021, issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where extracting date collected from surveys over the past 25 years in Copenhagen, Denmark, they observed a U-shaped association between weekly duration of leisure sports activities and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, with lowest risk for those participating in 2.6 to 4.5 weekly hours. In doses over 10 hours per week Substantial Continuation of the mortality benefits were observed. He recommends participation in sport activities should be promoted, but the potential risk of very high weekly hours of sport participation demonstrated less effectiveness and guidelines should be modified to also consider including both a lower and upper thresholds of leisure time sports participation.
