The Last Photo of Anne Frank Before She Hid #Shorts #History

This is one of the last photographs of Anne Frank taken before her family went into
hiding in the secret annex behind her father's office building at Prinsengracht 263.

Otto Frank moved his family to Amsterdam in 1934 to escape rising antisemitism in
Germany. By the spring of 1942, the situation in occupied Netherlands had become
critical. On July 5, 1942, Anne's older sister Margot received a notice ordering her
to report to a Nazi labor camp. The next day, the Frank family disappeared into the
hidden annex.

Anne was thirteen. She had received a red checkered diary as a birthday present three
weeks earlier. Over the next 25 months, she filled it — and then a second, then a
third — with reflections that would later be read by tens of millions of people in
more than 70 languages.

On August 4, 1944, the annex was raided. Anne was deported to Auschwitz, then to
Bergen-Belsen, where she died of typhus in February or March 1945 — only weeks before
the camp was liberated.

The photo above was taken when she was still a schoolgirl. She still smiled like one.
