The Solidarity Code: Cracking the Collective Action Puzzle | Hassan Damluji | TEDxArendal

How can we solve the collective action problems that plague human society?

Making cooperation work is hard, whether in the smallest of groups, or in the biggest team of all – humanity. The answer is solidarity. Solidarity is the golden thread that can stitch together the cooperation we need to thrive as people and planet in the 21st-century.

Hassan Damluji, Co-founder of think-tank Global Nation and the author of The Responsible Globalist (Penguin, 2021), talks about the findings of the first Global Solidarity Report, which he and his team released recently at the UN. He shows how the three drivers of global solidarity – identities, institutions and impacts – work in mutually reinforcing cycle. To reignite the cycle of solidarity, he argues that we can, and must, do a better job of channelling the surprisingly strong public support for cooperation into a transformative institutional response that meets the moment of our troubled times. Hassan is a senior executive, advisor and author on global affairs, with a track record of building and leading teams, organizations and large-scale initiatives, working in complex stakeholder environments. He is a co-founder of Global Nation, a think/do-tank aimed at improving global cooperation. Global Nation advises the world’s leading institutions working on tackling humanity’s greatest challenges, including the Gates Foundation, WHO, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Wellcome Trust, and national governments. It also receives grant funding to pursue thought-leadership and movement-building for a fairer international system.

Hassan has written extensively about global development and politics. His first book, The Responsible Globalist, was published by Penguin Allen Lane in 2019. It was described by Bill Gates as “thoughtful and well written”, by Riz Ahmed as “visionary” and by Richard Curtis as “the book I would have written if I was smart enough”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
