Rostock, city, Mecklenburg–West Pomerania Land (state), northeastern Germany.
It lies at the head of the Warnow River estuary, 8 miles (13 km) south-southeast of its Baltic outport at Warnemünde.
A Wendish settlement in the 12th century, the town was chartered in 1218.
