A marginal cord insertion is when the baby’s umbilical cord is not attached to the very center of the placenta. It is attached near the side but within 2 inches of the edge of it. It is very different than velamentous cord insertion.

The fear of having a marginal cord insertion is that because the cord is not attached to the very center of the placenta, baby has a higher risk of not getting an adequate supply of oxygen or nutrients. My doctor advised me to come in for monthly ultrasounds to monitor baby’s growth. On our last ultrasound, baby was still measuring to be healthy- and everything in labor and delivery went smoothly.

The only thing a little unusual was that the baby's cord was shorter than average. Baby couldn’t reach my chest, so baby sat on my stomach for skin to skin until the cord was clamped.
