The space pen works thanks to clever physics and engineering. Unlike regular pens that rely on gravity to pull ink down to the tip, the space pen uses pressurised nitrogen gas to force a special thixotropic ink (thick when still, but fluid when in motion) onto the ballpoint. This means it can write in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, and across extreme temperatures. The sealed, pressurised cartridge prevents ink from leaking or drying out, and the viscous ink resists forming bubbles, which is crucial in space where air pockets can interfere with writing.
