Los Tercios eran una unidad militar del Ejército español durante la época de la Casa de Austria que custodiaba y defendían el llamado Camino Español, corredor de 1.000 km abierto por los Tercios entre Milán y los Países Bajos.. Los tercios fueron famosos por su resistencia en el campo de batalla, formando la élite de las unidades militares disponibles para los reyes de España de la época. Los tercios fueron la pieza esencial de la hegemonía terrestre, y en ocasiones también marítima del Imperio español. El tercio es considerado el renacimiento de la infantería en el campo de batalla, comparable a las legiones romanas o las falanges de hoplitas macedónicas.
Los Tercios españoles fueron el primer ejército moderno europeo, entendiendo como tal un ejército formado por voluntarios profesionales, en lugar de las levas para una campaña y la contratación de mercenarios usadas típicamente en otros países europeos. El cuidado que se ponía en mantener en las unidades un alto número de "viejos soldados" (veteranos) y su formación profesional, junto a la particular personalidad que le imprimieron los orgullosos hidalgos de la baja nobleza que los nutrieron, es la base de que fueran la mejor infantería durante siglo y medio. Además, fueron los primeros en mezclar de forma eficiente las picas y las armas de fuego.

A partir de 1920 también reciben ese nombre las formaciones de tamaño regimental de la Legión Española, unidad profesional creada para combatir en las guerras coloniales del norte de África, y que se inspiraba en las gestas militares de los tercios históricos. La Legión Española también guarda ciertos parecidos con la Legión Extranjera del ejército francés.
La bandera es el Aspa de Borgoña o Cruz de San Andrés y el escudo es el oficial de Casa de los Austrias Españoles.

The Tercios were a military unit of the Spanish Army during the time of the House of Austria that guarded and defended the so-called Camino Español, a 1,000 km corridor opened by the Tercios between Milan and the Netherlands. From 1920 onwards, the regimental-sized formations of the Spanish Legion, a professional unit created to fight in the colonial wars of North Africa, and which was inspired by the military deeds of the historical thirds, also received that name. The Spanish Legion also keeps certain similarities with the Foreign Legion of the French army.
The flag is the Aspa de Borgoña or Cruz de San Andrés and the coat of arms is the official Spanish House of the Austrians.
