Stanford Viennese Ball 2014 - Opening Committee Waltz
The Stanford Viennese Ball Opening Committee waltzes to Les Patineurs (The Skaters), Op. 183 by Émile Waldteufel.
Choreography by Nick Enge and Melissa Carvell.
Video by Jason Anderson (http://www.youtube.com/mrjasonanderson)
The Story of the 2014 Polka and Waltz:
Our polka begins with a solo to an excerpt from Kinderspiele (Children's Games), Op. 304, by Johann Strauss II. Taking inspiration from the Opening quadrilles of decades past, this solo, adapted from authentic 19th century schottische quadrille figures, evokes a festive winter atmosphere.
These winter festivities are cut short, however, as a storm brews to the tune of Unter Donner und Blitz (Thunder and Lightning), Op. 324, also by Johann Strauss, Jr. Playing the role of the storm—and of those who are caught in it—are the ensemble dancers of this year's Opening Committee.
The next morning, the town awakens to a winter wonderland of freshly fallen snow—and ice. The soloists are the first to take to the ice, but soon after, everyone follows their lead, to the strains of Émile Waldteufel's Les Patineurs (The Skaters), Op. 183. Out of the storm comes new opportunities, and maybe, in the end, even a glimmer of sunlight.
