Marcus du Sautoy | The Creative Code to Thinking Better | Talks at Google

Marcus du Sautoy discusses his books "The Creativity Code" and "Thinking Better: The Art of the Shortcut in Math and Life".

Will a machine ever compose a symphony, write a prize-winning novel, or paint a masterpiece? And if so, would we be able to tell the difference? Based on his book The Creativity Code, Marcus du Sautoy explores the new developments in AI that are shaking up the status quo and asks how long it might be before machines come up with something creative, and whether they might jolt us into being more imaginative in turn. In his follow-up book Thinking Better he considers the one skill that humans might have over AI: our laziness! Instead of hard work humans are very good at finding the shortcut to solve a problem. And often the shortcut is mathematical.

Marcus du Sautoy is the Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He is author of seven books and two plays including I is a Strange Loop (Faber 2021) which was performed at the Barbican in London in which he was also lead actor. He has presented numerous radio and TV series including a four part landmark TV series for the BBC called The Story of Maths. He works extensively with a range of arts organizations bringing science alive for the public from The Royal Opera House to the Glastonbury Festival. He received an OBE for services to science in the 2010 New Year’s Honors List and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016.
