So a couple weeks ago I was going about my day, listening to music when I got two songs on shuffle in a row that mention space coupes. I never really thought about the term before even though I’ve heard it a bunch of times but for some reason hearing it two songs in a row made me think…”what the h*ll even is a space coupe? mean, obviously it’s a futuristic looking car, but what does that mean?” and then, the next thought: “why don’t I make a needlessly detailed, overly researched video analyzing exactly what a space coupe is because I like cars and I like hip hop and it could be kinda fun.
So let’s talk about space coupes. Who came up with the term, why do so many people say it and what exactly is a space coupe?
Strangely enough, the term space coupe first appeared in pop culture in 1962, in a much more literal sense than rappers use it today. Space Coupes were fictional devices in the D*ck Tracy detective comic series used for magnetic travel between the Earth and the Moon. They were drawn like big tubes with the word space coupe written on the side. In short: a coupe that goes to space.
Now the word space coupe wouldn’t be used in music until 51 years later when Justin Timberlake released the song spaceship coupe as a track on his album the 20/20 experience released on march 15 2013. Now that’s not particularly important but what we do need to know is that Future, probably writing his verse last minute, used the term just a month later on the song Another Country by Atlanta rapper Ca$h Out. The song is a banger about Future and Ca$h Out’s favorite place to source their cars and women - anywhere but domestically. Now in the song Ca$h Out specifically mentions Future having a Bugatti, which is itself a reference to another song by Ace Hood in which Future yells I WOKE UP IN A NEW BUGATTI like 50 times in a row while wearing some embarrassing a*s all black half leather outfit because it was 2013 and dressing like Rick Owens crossed with a depressed 13 year old was considered drippy.
Anyway, that’s not important. The important part is the bugatti. Because we need some sort of baseline definition of what a space coupe is and D*ck Tracy’s giant magnetic tube isn’t gonna do.

This video discusses the history of supercars and modern hip hop's obsession with them. Volksgeist talks about Future, Nicki Minaj, Bugatti, Lamborghini, McLaren, Lil Pump, 6ix9ine, Travis Scott and Kanye West. This video is a commentary on the music industry.
