Partnership & Promise

The video depicts the early days of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) and the crucial role of community-directed treatment (ComDT) with ivermectin, the mainstay of APOC and the singular tool which a diverse partnership has used to drive onchocerciasis to the brink of elimination.

It also includes a brief portrait of ‘Agnes', a young Nigerian mother, whose life in a poor, remote rural village had been devastated by the disease, who became a village volunteer in the ComDT system to help herself, her family, and her community, and who has been chosen as one of the recipients of the inaugural “Women in Focus” awards to be announced at the NTD Summit meeting in Geneva.

The video was made by the TDR Communications unit (producer Andy Crump), based on the research work and guidance from lead researchers at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Dr Uche Amazigo and Dr Dan Obikeze).
