Take a look inside a MEMS accelerometer.
In this video, I open up a Yaw-rate Sensor, allegedly from inside a 2008-2014 Subaru WRX STI, if you believe the Ebay listing. Inside the yaw-rate sensor is a number of parts, the most interesting part being the BOSCH MEMS accelerometer.
MEMS (Micro-electromechanical systems) are electronic devices that incorporate miniaturized mechanical components. The Bosch SMB225 is a dual-axis accelerometer made with MEMS technology. The MEMS components consist of two two parts; fixed comb-like fingers and a free-floating weight (also with comb-like fingers). As the part experiences forces from outside accelerations, the weight will move with respect to the stationary parts. This movement creates a changing capacitance, which is sampled by the nearby ASIC, which converts it into acceleration data.
These types of sensors are used for many applications in cars, like preventing rollovers, or in the case of a rollover or crash, deploying airbags.
