The Golden Spurtle | VFF 2026

The Golden Spurtle
Director - Constantine Costi
UK 2025 75 min
Quirky + Wholesome + Nourishing

Every year, the sleepy Scottish village of Carrbridge welcomes a global parade of hopeful porridge makers, all seeking to win the coveted ‘Golden Spurtle’ for the best bowl of steaming oats and milk. This annual porridge making championship is lovingly documented by filmmaker Constantine Costi - whose whimsical, at times Wes Anderson-esque approach captures the irresistibly quirky humanity of village life, all against the breathtaking backdrop of the Scottish Highlands.

At the heart of this crowd-pleasing documentary, is Charlie Miller - a local porridge aficionado, who has dedicated his life to organizing the championship. With his health failing, this year will be the last under Charlie’s tenure before he hands on the golden spurtle to the next generation of porridge lovers. The documentary intimately follows Charlie and a cast of deeply dedicated, often eccentric, competitors in the anxious weeks leading up to, and during, the main event.

Much like the humble bowl of porridge, this film isn’t flashy or even particularly enticing on paper, but with only the simplest ingredients, Costi infuses this film with great comfort, humour and warmth.
