Zen Keyboard Build Log

Zen is the worlds thinnest split keyboard. At just 8mm thin, Zen has a lower profile than the mechanical switches inside it.

Starting at $55, Zen significantly lowers the barrier to entry for a full sized (non 40%) split keyboard.

While it’s internals and code are based on keeb.io’s Iris, Zen’s layout is inspired by ErgoDox, and is in many ways it’s spiritual successor. Zen moves the split keyboard world forward by using a dual PCB design. The bottom PCB houses 12 individually addressable RGB LEDs, with the middle PCB housing mechanical switches and control electronics.

This DIY board differs from most on the market in almost all components are surface mount as opposed to through hole mount. This design decision allows Zen to package many of complex components in its low profile case.

This build log details my experience assembling Zen. It is intended largely to be a visual supplement to the written build guide here: https://legonut.gitbooks.io/zen-keyboard/content/
