A day in Venizelos Graves Park-Feb2021- Chania⛪️🌳

Kalimera dear friends,
Good morning from this gorgeous sunny day :))

Today, we decided to go pay tribute to the great heroes of Crete as it’s the memory of one brave man who was the reason that Crete got it’s independence , this man is
Spiros Kayales.

We are headed to
Venizelos Tombs / park in Chania Crete
Which is named after yet another brave man (Eleftherios Venizelos)
also Athens Airport is named after him,
He was a Greek statesman and a prominent leader of the Greek national liberation movement.
He is noted for his contribution to the expansion of Greece. and the most significant politician of modern Greece.
As he took part in several revolutions and fought for the independence and union of Crete with Greece.
Greece is filled with such inspiring stories, both in ancient and modern times a like.
I believe that the greeks are growing on huge shoes to fill, which I believe might be stressful!
yet, it comes naturally when your born as a greek
from Zeus times until now, the greeks taught the world so much about bravery, love, pleasure, art and most of all democracy!
and what an exceptionally beautiful day to celebrate a significant occasion.

But first coffee!

We passed by this unforgettable restaurant that we love.
Carte postal, and the view from here is truly a post card image at any given time and in any given season. The restaurant is sadly open only for deliveries and take away as lock-down is on all over Greece & Europe .
Of course our coffees come in a paper cups.
We’ll take them to enjoy them in the park.

It’s so sunny that even the pine trees think it’s spring already.

And here he is (Spiros Kayales) the man that we are celebrating today,
he served at Akrotiri Revolution, along with his brothers Yorgos, Manolis, Antonis and Sifis.
on this day, 4th of Feb 1897
When the Allies started bombing Chania to frighten the rebels against the Ottoman Occupation
a bomb shell shredded the Greek flag, then Kayales made his own body a flagpole and raised it high not afraid to get bombed him self.
When the admirals saw through their telescopes the Greek flag flying proudly with a man holding it,
they ordered the bombardment to end, they were speechless at Cretan bravery.

The Cretan revolutionary camp rejoiced with happiness & the national anthem was sung on the Greek battleship (Hydra).
The Cheers and applause were heard not only from the Greek but even from the Italian and French ships! ...
I get goosebumps every time I remember this story, and every time I see this statue.

my next video will be rainy and stormy.
thank you for watching,

see you soon :))
