COPD

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is a progressive lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. It includes:

1. Chronic bronchitis
2. Emphysema
3. Refractory (non-reversible) asthma

Causes:

1. Long-term exposure to lung irritants like:
- Cigarette smoke
- Air pollution
- Occupational dusts
2. Genetic factors (alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency)

Symptoms:

1. Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
2. Wheezing
3. Coughing (with or without mucus)
4. Chest tightness
5. Blue lips or fingernail beds (in severe cases)

Stages:

1. Mild: minimal symptoms
2. Moderate: symptoms worsen, with some limitation in activities
3. Severe: significant symptoms, significant limitation in activities
4. Very severe: extreme symptoms, complete limitation in activities

Treatment:

1. Medications:
- Bronchodilators
- Corticosteroids
- Phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors
2. Pulmonary rehabilitation
3. Oxygen therapy
4. Lifestyle changes:
- Quit smoking
- Exercise regularly
- Avoid lung irritants

Note: COPD is a manageable condition, but not curable. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve quality of life.
