TERRACE GARDEN PALMA SESTEPA DESIGN MALLORCA

Mediterranean Terrace

Located on the top floor of a contemporary building in Palma, this terrace was originally conceived as an open, functional space, devoid of any vegetative character. The brief was to transform it into a livable garden by integrating permanent greenery, climatic comfort, and an aesthetic aligned with the architectural language of its surroundings.

Concept
The intervention stems from a sensitive reading of the site: solar orientation, wind exposure, sea and city views, and transitions between indoors and outdoors. The goal was to endow the space with a clear vegetative identity, using species adapted to the Mediterranean climate, low-maintenance, and with strong visual presence—capable of dialoguing with the urban landscape and contemporary architecture.

The design is structured around large-format linear planters that outline the functional zones and house a botanical composition alternating green masses, contrasting textures, and controlled heights. This layout defines without compartmentalizing, creating differentiated areas for lounging, gathering, and contemplation.

Plant Composition
The selection of species responds to functional, aesthetic, and climatic criteria:

Strelitzia nicolai: the dominant vertical element, offering great formal plasticity.

Chamaerops humilis and Phoenix roebelenii: compact, resilient palms suited for elevated, windy environments.

Rhapis excelsa, Cycas revoluta, and Monstera deliciosa: provide density, texture, and foliage diversity across mid and lower strata.

Focal points feature columnar cacti, Echinocactus grusonii, and sculptural succulents in large ceramic pots, enhancing the composition with their geometric sobriety and drought tolerance.

Materials and Furnishing
Large-format porcelain paving in light stone tones reinforces visual continuity and enhances the terrace’s brightness. The furniture, with clean lines and a neutral palette, complements rather than competes with the planting, creating clearly defined dining and relaxation zones. The arrangement encourages open views, fluid circulation, and flexible use throughout the day.

Sustainability and Maintenance
The chosen species offer high resistance to environmental stress (salinity, wind, intense solar radiation), low water demand, and minimal pruning needs, ensuring long-term sustainability. The use of inert, durable materials, along with proper substrate preparation and drainage systems, ensures the structural viability of this rooftop garden.
