How to fix the dreaded Windows phantom HP printer bug

You might be here because all your printers were recently changed to HP printers. Not long ago, Microsoft released a faulty update to Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs, which affected the metadata for installed printers, even the built-in Microsoft Print to PDF printer. The issue would cause all installed printers to be changed to "HP LaserJet M101-M106" and the HP Smart app would get installed. On my system, the printers still functioned as usual and their names (as listed in Devices and Printers) were not changed, yet their icons did change to the old HP LaserJet model. This is not HP's fault, but rather Microsoft's fault. Microsoft has released a method to manually fix this issue, as it appears an official hotfix has not been released via Windows Update. For now, you must use the command prompt to launch this troubleshooter. In this video, I'll go over how to do this.
