F-Stops Measure What? (Part 3)

This video is part of my Ultimate Guide to Aperture training which can be found at https://davidmolnar.com/aperture. Visit for helpful infographics to understand aperture, written descriptions, cheat sheets and more!

What is an f-stop? F-stops measure increments in the size of the hole in your lens that lets light into the image sensor of your camera.

F-stop measurements are the opposite of what you might think they should be. An f-stop of 1.8 is a much larger hole than f16 is.

The 'stop' in an f-stop refers to stops of light. Every time you decrease the size of your aperture by one stop, it reduces the amount of light entering the image sensor by half. For example, when you change the aperture of your camera from f-1.8 to f-2.8, the light stop is reduced by half.

When you open up your aperture a stop, it doubles the amount of light that reaches your camera sensor.

Stops of light can also be affected by the other aspects of the exposure triangle, shutter speed and ISO, which we'll discuss in a future video.
