1997 Mercedes Benz C36 AMG (W202) Review - The First Mercedes AMG In-depth Tour, Acceleration Test, and Walkaround
Before Mercedes Benz AMG sedans, coupes, and even SUVs were prevalent, AMG was a totally separate entity from Mercedes Benz. It was an independent tuning company that catered to the wants and needs of Mercedes Benz enthusiasts (and Mitsubishi Galant) who wanted more power from their luxurious land yachts.
When Mercedes Benz first launched the C Class W201 190E/190D platform dubbed as the Baby Benz, it was an instant hit being a small nimble car that was also way more affordable than the typical Mercedes Benz such as the E Class or the S Class. To capitalize on this success, Mercedes Benz released the successor to it, the W202 C Class. It enjoyed a rather narrow range of engine choices from the 1.8L C180 with only 122PS, all the way to the top of the line 2.8L C280 with the S Class W140 S280's engine, but even this only produced 197PS.
From 1995 - 1997, to address this lack of power, Mercedes Benz and AMG partnered up to jointly develop their first ever limited production Mercedes Benz AMG sedan: the Mercedes Benz C36 AMG. Unlike it's latter big brother E Class counterpart, the E55 AMG, the C36 wasn't really developed from the ground up, and was instead just a regular run-of-the-mill C280 but received a sampler of parts from Mercedes Benz's flagship cars such as the M104 3.2L engine from the S Class W140 S320, but then bored out to 3.6L, brakes from the R129 V12 SL600, transmission from the 500E W124 sedan that was co-developed with Porsche, and upgraded suspension. Don't forget cosmetic upgrades such as the body kits, exhausts pipes, and 17 inch AMG Monoblock 2 rims to match.
All that special package is able to propel this tiny sedan from 0 - 100km/h in just 5.8s all the way to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. Remove the speed limiter and you can even go to 272km/h. Fast by today's standards, and supercar fast for the late 1990s.
