17-Year-Old Built a Nuclear Reactor in His Mom's Shed #truestory #didyouknow

In 1994 - a 17-year-old Boy Scout
from Commerce Township, Michigan
decided his Atomic Energy merit badge
wasn't enough.
He wanted to build an actual nuclear reactor.
In his mother's potting shed.
So David Hahn got to work.

His safety precautions —
two handwritten signs on the shed door.
"Caushon."
"Radioactve."
When his own Geiger counter started detecting radiation five houses away-
he panicked.
Packed everything into his car trunk.
Sealed the box with duct tape.
Opened the trunk.
The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad arrived.
Then the FBI.
Then the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Then the EPA.
Radiation inside the shed —
1,000 times above normal background levels.
40,000 residents potentially at risk.
David was never charged.
He never meant any harm.
On September 27th 2016 —
David Hahn was found dead in his apartment.
Age 39.
Accidental intoxication.
Not radiation.
Not the reactor.
Not the shed.
He survived the radiation.
Didn't survive everything else.

This is a Strange But True Event That Actually Happened.
