Turning a Chinkapin Oak Bowl - Limb from 400 year old tree!

This wood is from a limb that fell during a storm last year. I'm told the local tree it is from is over 400 years old. Considering there's about 100 years of growth rings in this 10" diameter branch and seeing the size of the tree, it certainly seems like a reasonable estimate to me. The wood is very hard with the outer sapwood being significantly bug-eaten, but that adds a pretty cool look to the outer perimeter of the bowl.

A side note... I've been trying to do some talking videos because so many people have requested them. Unfortunately, talking adds a level of difficulty to the recording and editing process that really slows everything down. That's why it's been three weeks since my last video... and I still don't have one edited with commentary. It's been a challenge. Since I don't talk in my videos, I try to show all my steps clearly, but these videos are more of a demonstration than a how-to. I hope you'll pick up some tricks and ideas from them, but use the tools and processes you're comfortable with - you don't have to do it the same way I do. Of course, you are ALWAYS welcome to ask me questions in the comments. I do my best to respond to all of them, even if it takes me a few days. It's awesome that so many people have been watching my videos and finding them helpful or interesting! It really blows my mind sometimes, so a big "Thank You" goes out to everyone who watches and subscribes! I hope my videos help other woodturners, but I'd really love for them to get new people interested in woodturning as a hobby and an art form! Let me know if you're a non-woodworker who watches... Thanks again, everyone!
