In addition to the grandiose lighting design, Blade Runner is also known for its music. Ridley Scott made the bold decision to go with an all-electronic soundtrack for the film, which fits in very well with the future setting of the film. The synth sounds - composed by the Greek composer Vangelis - decisively shape the atmosphere of the film.

Technically, the entire music of the film is based on the electronic sounds of the Yamaha CS80 synthesizer. Due to the very free sound modulation of the CS80, the sound of the synthesizer can be completely different, which is also reflected in the film's soundtrack. The thrown-in, arpeggiated chords, which have a very bell-like sound, stand out above all. Opposite them is the sound design of the main theme. This consists of a relatively simple melody, the sound of which seems to be modeled on a trumpet, and accompanying string-like chords. The ends of the melodies often glissando downwards, causing them to sound like passing vehicles. This shows another quality of the soundtrack: it fits seamlessly into the film's sound design and rarely pushes itself to the fore.

In this way, Vangelis creates emotions that at first glance don't seem to fit the city's sombre imagery. Because the soft sound of the music creates longing and melancholy that the pictures alone could not evoke. The music thus makes a decisive contribution to glorifying the world of film, into which the viewer longs to return even though he has never been there.

For me, this generation of longing is what gives the film Blade Runner cult status. The special atmosphere is created when opposites meet: in the unknown of the huge, multicultural metropolis of Los Angeles, there are still many well-known references to pop culture - whether in the people's clothing, the neon signs or the architecture of the buildings. At the same time, Vangeli's music sounds as if this metropolis were not unknown to us at all. This is exactly what makes the film so special.
