We traced the pipelines from Chinatown to Marsiling | The Singapore Pipeline Walk in 360°
A walk down memory lane and the future, wrote Vivian Balakrishnan (then the Environment and Water Resources Minister) in 2014 when he took a walk with the Nature Society tracing the pipeline along the rail corridor.
The 90-year-old Central Pipeline Reserve that was used to convey water from Gunung Pulai in Johor to Pearl’s Hill Service Reservoir in our city.
Responding to our self-imposed challenge, Simon and Guan Ling took a walk along this 28km route from Pearl's Hill reservoir to Marsiling (Woodlands St 41). It was supposed to be a pleasant day, right around 32 degrees celsius, but it easily felt like 40 outside as we began the trek. To say it was hot and sticky is an understatement!
There are numerous hidden gems of flora and fauna that grow along the trail, making for some unique photo opportunities that would make any professional smile with anticipation. Put on some comfortable shoes, enjoy a beautiful day and the walk!
Things to take note during the walk
1) Drink lots of water and apply tons of sunblock. You will be exposed to the elements especially the part after Rifle Range to Marsiling.
2) Do keep your volume down when you are walking in the backyards of private homes. Do not take pictures of their houses (no matter how impressive their swimming pools are!)
3) Avoid walking on the pipes if you have a fear of height or confined spaces. Just make a detour. You'll still get through.
4) Do not perform dangerous stunts like leaping between pipes and doing jump shots.
5) Do not climb over wires or barriers
6) Wear a shoe with good grip. It can get slippery on the pipes and on the trails, especially on a wet day.
7) Do not trespass into private property or Mindef Training Ground
Enjoy your walk!
