Nirvana - IV LEAGUE (1996)- Alternate History Album
After returning from Rome with his wife, Love, Cobain admits himself into rehab. At the start of April instead of buying a gun, Cobain instead sneaks away from rehab feeling disillusioned with the rockstar lifestyle. On April 5th, 1994, Cobain doesn't take his own life, instead, he invites friends Pat Smear and Dave Grohl over. The trio spends the day relaxing after canceling the European tour. The two convince him to divorce Love, which he begins the process to do. Kurt, Krist, Pat, and Dave would spend the remainder of 1994 mending ties and taking a much-needed hiatus from the limelight. Cobain would spend this time in rehab, tapering off his use of heroin.
By early winter of 1995 Cobain meets up with Dave Grohl at his friend's studio in Seattle to begin demoing songs. Kurt asks Dave to join him as a second songwriter for the new chapter of Nirvana. This new album titled IV, as a reference to them now being a 4 piece band would also be their 4th album. This album would shift more in a hard rock direction and was to mimic the high's and low's brought on by Cobain's depression. It would also feature fully fleshed out versions of previous b-sides and rarities. Dave Grohl would lend several of his own material to the album, and during live shows would trade roles with Cobain who would be his drummer. Dave in this timeline does not go onto form the Foo Fighters but instead slowly becomes the helm of songwriting for Nirvana. Dave wants to shift the band more into an alternative / hard rock direction while Cobain is ready to ditch the grunge scene. The two would intensely collaborate on the album.
The main purpose of this album was to let the band go back to them making music as they used to without drama or media interference. The album would go onto knock Green Day off the charts beginning a fierce rivalry between the bands. The album would launch with 4 singles, two of Kurt's songs, two of Dave's. The album would release early of 1996.
