Christopher Markou about AI, legal practice and human intelligence, which will keep humanity alive

We are excited to introduce to you quite a new and very interesting conversation. In this video, Christopher elaborates on the impacts of AI on Legal practice. He encourages us to perceive AI as complementary not as replacing the mechanism of the legal process. He utterly believes that "People need people. We do not surrender our role as decision-makers and, actually, AI should help us better in being ourselves". He also accepts that AI is outstanding in processing existing information, but it can not create not existing information and apply it to the situation like judges do. Human intelligence is very good at creating.

Christopher is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow and Affiliated Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, and a Postdoctoral Associate at Jesus College, The University of Cambridge.

His research project Artificial Intelligence and Legal Evolution broadly examines how advances in AI are changing the nature of the legal practice, and examines how the shift towards an increasingly algorithmically intermediated legal system might debase established legal and democratic norms, and potentially displace the ‘rule of law’ for a new ‘rule of technology’. Christopher lectures on the LLM module Economics of Law and Regulation, focusing on the regulation of AI and related digital technologies and the extent to which the legal/regulatory challenges they pose are fundamentally distinct from those faced at earlier periods of industrialization.
