Trapped in a Whiteout Nightmare | The Cairngorm Plateau Disaster

In November 1971, a group of 14 students and their three adult leaders set out on a winter navigation exercise in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland. The students, all teenagers from Ainslie Park School in Edinburgh, were part of an outdoor group led by Ben Beattie, a qualified mountaineering instructor, and Catherine Davidson. Their goal was to traverse the Cairngorm Plateau and reach the Curran Bothy, a small shelter where they planned to stay overnight. The group set off from Glenmore Lodge, with weather conditions already challenging—strong winds and freezing temperatures. As they ascended, the weather rapidly deteriorated, with fierce blizzards, whiteout conditions, and extreme wind chill making navigation increasingly difficult. Despite their training, the brutal conditions slowed their progress, and they began to veer off course. Realizing they were in trouble, they attempted to take shelter and wait out the storm. However, the relentless winds and plummeting temperatures turned their situation into a desperate battle against the elements.
