Historic Drumming Lesson No. 21 | British Cadence Baltimore

HistoricDrumming presents Revolutionary War drum lessons.

In this video, I'll teach you how to play Baltimore, a stock beating for 6/8 marching cadences.

This beating is a staple marching cadence for both American and British drummers. It also pairs well to most fife tunes in 6/8, including American Artillery QS, Baltimore, French Quick March, Malbrouk, Nancy Dawson, Stoney Point, and The Moon & Seven Stars, as well as many regimental QS.
REQUIRED RUDIMENTS: You must have a decent grasp of the following rudiments before learning this beating:
- 7-Stroke Rolls
- The Flam

TAUGHT RUDIMENTS:
- Flam Accent

This version of Baltimore comes from Benjamin Clark's MS (c. 1797). There is an identical version is Hazeltine, Instructor in Martial Music, 1817, and a very similar version in Issac Day's MS (c. 1797) and Lovering, The Drummer's Assistant, 1818. Robinson, Massachusetts Collection of Martial Musick, 1820, includes the same Line A, but a Double Drag variation for Line B.
