Why Papyrus & Sans are Named After Fonts [Advent Calendar #7]

Papyrus and Sans of Undertale fame are, it's been well documented, named after the fonts, Papyrus and Comic Sans. Why?

Well, because Toby Fox is friends with J.N. Wiedle, a phenomenally talented artist who, among many other things, created the webcomic Helvetica, about a skeleton who is, himself, named after a font.

Papyrus and Sans didn't come out of nowhere, they're actually a parody of Helvetica.

A couple of years ago, J.N. Wiedle was kind enough to give us some of their time for an interview which we haven't yet actually released. Here's a little snippet of it for your enjoyment, in which they talk about the origin of these two skeletons.

Here's hoping you enjoy this Advent Calendar video. From this point onwards, these will probably be shorter. This one took too long to make.

We decided to do this because last December was fairly light on news and we didn't have much to cover, but between the announcement of Persona 5 Strikers, the ongoing backlash against Nintendo cancelling eSports events, the release of Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal coming to Switch, and the Game Awards, December 2020 has actually been very busy.

We wish we had time to make videos on all these topics, but we're just too swamped! Maybe we'll pick and choose one other thing this week to do a video on - but not if these Advent Calendar videos keep creeping up in length!
