“Freedom is the most important value because it’s the condition in which we can affirm all the other things that we care about,” says CFR democracy expert Timothy Snyder. “There are basic conditions for freedom, which are out there in the three dimensions of the world, and it’s impossible to get to freedom if you don’t talk about the other values because freedom is fundamentally—it’s like the tent under which all the other values can thrive.”
