Inside the Westport House - Ireland's most beautiful heritage attraction.

The jewel in the crown of Mayo, Westport House was first opened to the public is 1960 making it one of Ireland’s best loved heritage attractions. The house - built in 1730 -  brings visitors back in time to experience life in an 18th century family home. It was built by and was the family home to the Marquess of Sligo and remained in the Browne family for nearly 400 years. This "big house" dates back to a castle that once existed on the site belonging to a famous ancestor of the Brownes -  Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Connaught. It is now owned by Westport natives and former tenants of the estate, the Hughes family. As you can imagine - this house has some story to tell.
