Journey of a Wild Devil’s Garden Mustang | Wild to Sporthorse
I picked up Polkadot in November 2022 not planning on keeping him for long. He was just going to be a TIP horse initially and then I decided to keep him as a project, maybe 6 months max. I kept him because I could tell he had amazing potential. Not only was he tall, colorful, and from a great HMA he was a flashy mover and a talented jumper. I thought this could be my english horse to produce and find a home for, helping to represent mustangs as talented sport horses!
I quickly realized Polkadot was not going to be a quick project. It’s not that he was super reactive or fearful of me, and I got him accepting a saddle and ground driving pretty quick, but he was just too immature at the time. He was coming 4, but he was awkward, butt high, uncoordinated, and baby brained. He was super insecure and worried about a lot. So I ended up turning him out with my other horses and having him live in the pasture for about 8 months. I would pull him up to trim him and make sure he remembered his handling skills but for the most part he was just growing up.
Well after the makeover with Talos I brought him back into work, he was still living in the pasture but I got him started under saddle within two weeks because he remembered everything so well! He had grown up so much, his body was much more balanced and his concentration improved. I put a few rides on him and took him to Florida to work for Elisa Wallace. She helped me get him going under saddle and started over fences! I took him to some outings and got him some really good experience!
Polkadot is already doing amazing with Lila Gendal and being a perfect ambassador to the mustangs. I’m so proud of how my “little branded warmblood” has come! Good boy Polkadot! You’re gonna make your owner so happy 🥰
