Situated 850 miles off the coast of mainland Portugal, the Azores archipelago is made up of nine volcanic islands. The islands are in fact the peaks of some of the world's tallest mountains, reaching from deep beneath the Atlantic.

The Azores are one of two Autonomous Regions of Portugal (the other is Madeira).
